It's important to refer to the operating manual than comes with the coffee maker of choice, but here are a few basic instructions on how to brew a fine cup of coffee

French Press - Coarse Grind

A French press is easy and clean, and requires boiling water and a wait time of four minutes.

  1. Preheat the French Press with hot water, and then empty it.

  2. Use tablespoon of freshly ground coffee to every 8 ounces of water. the rule of thumb is one tablespoon per cup or mug of coffee.  Feel free to experiment

  3. Add boiling water to the ground coffee and wait for four minutes.

  4. Slowly press the plunger down to separate the coffee from the grounds.  Enjoy

(Be careful here as if you go too fast the hot coffee may come shooting out the top.)

Drip Filter Machine - Medium Grind

  1. Use 2 tablespoons of coffee for every 8 ounces of water

  2. Put filter into basket and place coffee inside the filter.  Use cold water in the reservoir, filling to the desired level

  3. Turn on the machine, sit back and take in the heavenly aroma of fresh ground coffee being brewed.  Enjoy

Espresso - Fine Grind

Espresso is a concentrated  coffee beverage  that is normally made in a machine  using pressure to force hot water through the ground coffee.  Properly made Espresso will have a nice 'crema' or a caramel foam on the surface, with a bold flavour, which is essential for a use in drinks like cappuccinos or lattes.

  1. pre heat the portafilter with hot water.  Dry the portafilter and evenly distribute the ground coffee into the basket filter.  There are single and double shots (check with the manual of your particular machine for coffee grind volumes as these may vary by manufacturer)

  2. With approximately 30 pounds of pressure, tamp the surface of the ground coffee flat.  Make sure there are no holes or crack to channel the water, it should be a solid "cake" of coffee

  3. Before you insert the portafiter into the machine, flush the machine with 2 seconds of hot water.  Insert the portafilter using a quarter turn.

  4. Brew the coffee for aproximately  25 seconds, which will create about 2 ounces. Enjoy!

Stove Top Coffee Maker - Fine Grind

There are two chambers to this coffee maker, a lower half where the water to boil goes, and an upper half with a basket inside that holds the fine ground coffee.

  1. After the pots have been separated, fill the bottom with water, and put the fine ground coffee into the filter basket.  Re-assemble the two halves

  2. Place on a stove element on medium heat

  3. The water will be forced upwards through the basket into the top chamber.

  4. Pour into heated cups. Enjoy!
